Golden Derailleur Parade: Please join us for a parade to escort the Golden Derailleur (and me) from Chicago to my place. Current plan is March 13 around 2 p.m. (after chainlinkers get done riding in the Green Party section of a parade).
Why the parade? I got scared off my bike over a year ago so that's why you only see me on group rides on my funny bike. Todd Gee made the gorgeous award to fit perfectly in a milk crate so I need to dust off my big bike to get the award home...But I'm scared...So that's when Nick Wilson suggested organizing a ride to escort me and the award home.
I will be riding my big bike so I'll be able to go faster than a snail's sprint.
Joseph might be able to haul broken Aaron on his Xtracycle.
Feel free to dress up your bikes and yourself and to bring instruments (or a band) or whatever you want to make this a festive parade.
It is less than 13 miles from Daley Plaza to my place and Joseph has a really nice route for us to use. Metra (BNSF Aurora), Pace (#322), CTA (#21 or Forest Park Blue Line or 54th/Cermak Pink Line) are available if you're not up for riding both ways.
Once at my place, we can have a potluck (if it's nice out we can use the courtyard or go to the Forest Preserve a couple blocks away) or go to the zoo 1/2-mile from my place (http://www.czs.org/czs/Brookfield/Plan-Your-Day/General-Information.aspx) or go down the street for food at Chef Shangri-La (http://www.chefshangrila.com/) or somethin'...
I hope to see you there!

| Gapers Block Criterium Races: This five-day series gives newer racers a low-cost, low-tech, nearby opportunity to try out criterium events and gain valuable experience, skills, and confidence before the season opens. Series: Online registration is for the 5-day series of races only. One day registration is day-of on-site only. Your registration fee here covers the cost of five days of racing. (While the field limit is 50, pre-registration is capped at 40 per field to allow space for day-of registrants.) Licensing: All riders pre-registering MUST have a USA Cycling annual license, available at the USAC website. Non-license-holders may register day-of, but will pay a $10/day additional day-of license fee. Day-of: If you prefer to register for individual races day-of, at least 10 spaces will be available in each field each day. Fees will be $20/day for men and $10/day for women. If you do not hold a USAC license, there will be an additional $10/day licensing fee. Cash or check only. Riding multiple fields: Riders will not be allowed to pre-register for more than one field. Any multiple entries will be canceled and refunded. Riders wishing to participate in more than one race a day may pay the day-of fee and register the day of the race for their second field. Rules: This event is held under USAC permit, all USAC rules apply. All riders must wear an approved helmet at all times while at the race venue. No alcohol is allowed in the park. Results: This is a low-tech training criterium series. Results will list top finishers (we aim to have 10-deep placings, but it is not always possible) and all other riders will be scored as DNP, "did not place." Directions: Get your warm-up by riding down! Follow the Bike Route signs from the Lake Front Path. Or, if you must take a car... If you follow online directions you'll get off the I-90 skyway at 92nd, the first exit after/before the toll, and pay $3 each way every day. Instead, we recommend exit the Dan Ryan !-94 at 63rd (exit 58B), go east on 63rd, south on King, and take South Chicago Ave. Left on 95th which leads into the park. Stay right at the T with Crilly. You can park along Crilly before the Ave G stop sign. Racing will be South on S Ave G, left turn onto E 100th Dr, continue left onto Crilly Dr, then left back to Ave G. Weather considerations: Events will be starting rain or shine. Where does the money go? Half Acre Cycling believes that racing should be affordable and we have worked hard to make this series the least expensive racing in the region. Still, we know it's not cheap. Our main costs include permitting fees (City of Chicago, Chicago Parks District, and USAC), USAC licensing fees (how we get insurance for the event), paying our officials, and paying our paramedic. A key reason this series is so affordable is because we've chosen not to pay for cash payouts or prizes and our volunteers are absorbing more of the work. If you would like to help out, please let us know. Or, if your club is interested in hosting a more affordable, accessible event, we'd be happy to share how we've done this with you. SPECIAL THANKS to Chicago Parks District, Alderman Pope, District 4 police, Illinois Cycling Association. | Calumet Park (9801 S. Ave. G) | Mon, Mar 22, 2010 | 6:00 p.m. | Half Acre Cycling | 1215 |

The Spring 2010 training will be held at the Chicago Center for Green Technology, 445 N. Sacramento Blvd, Saturdays, April 10, 17, 24, and May 1 from 9:30am - 1:30pm. | Wheel Building: Build your own wheels! Participants learn how to lace spokes into a wheel, apply tension to spokes, and make a wheel round and true. Wheel building theory will also be discussed in class. We will be using the Gerd Schraner method of wheel building. 3 cross spoked wheels in either 32 or 36 hole rims and hubs will be built. Using this method makes a strong, reliable and servicable set of wheels. Class 1 we will lace both front and rear wheels. Class two we will tension, round and true both wheels. Rims, hubs and spokes may be ordered and purchased through our sales shop Ciclo Urbano. Select rims, hubs and spokes chosen by the instructor will be on hand and may be purchased by participants, or built up for WTB with no purchase necessary. Specialty hubs and rims can be ordered and are subject to availability but must be specified and placed two weeks before the start of class. Participants should consult with the instructor if planning to supply their own rims, hubs and spokes for the class. Proper spoke calculations must be made to assure proper building of wheels. | West Town Bikes (2459 W. Division St.) | Mon, Mar 29, 2010 | 7:00 p.m. | Sarah 773-772-6523 |

Liar's Tour: The scary thing about this ride, is that if you show up, will I?
Nearly everything about this tour is a lie. Celebrating April Fool's Day, I am doing a tour of the Northside of Chicago, where, in contrast to the architecture/neighborhood tours I do, EVERY STOP IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR OUTRAGEOUS MISINFORMATION.
The ride will be 10 to 15 miles. It will certainly involve large amounts of fibbing, nonsense, tall-tales, April Fool's jokes, and bike riding. And a bit of drinking too.
To start things off, here are a few lies about the ride:
1 - No one will have any fun.
2 - We will start directly on time.
3 - I will be doing my normal, detailed research on every subject for the ride.
4 - I will be wearing a suit for the first time in over a decade.
5 - Howard Kaplan will be there.
6 - This ride will completely suck.
See you there.......maybe.
Cheers - Lee Diamond |

Wicker Park Critical Mass: We're still here! EVERY SINGLE First Friday at 6PM. Let me know if you can help get the word out, too. The Wicker Park Critical Mass – fill the streets with bikes, art, and happiness! Just as our city has a diverse array of neighborhoods and people, so too does its Critical Mass. Through the WPCM, and the neighborhood 'masses in general, new and old cyclists alike are re-connecting to the freewheelin' grassroots efforts to promote the fun and efficiency of biking through urban life. From the arterial crossroads of the Nelsen Algren fountain, our mass snakes through public spaces of architectural and artistic beauty. We are the Critical Mass of Wicker Park, the fruit of the Chicago Critical Mass, and the vehicle for public art in public space. |

Critical Mass is Out for Blood - Blood Drive: Join Critical Mass riders today at the Thompson Center to donate blood at LifeSource.
Did you know that when you donate blood through LifeSource you can give them a group code to give a specific group credit for your efforts to help save lives?
The Chicago Critical Mass group code is CM99. Please consider using this code for all of your future LifeSource blood donations. Just tell the person at the front desk that you have a group code and tell them it is CM99.
LifeSource is familiar with the CM99 code at the Thompson Center donor center but if they look at you funny, it is the perfect opportunity to talk up Critical Mass.
If today is not a good day to donate, you can walk in or schedule an appointment M 11:00 a.m. - 6 p.m. or Tu-F 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. If the Thompson Center is not a good location for you, visit their web site for a list of donor centers and hours.
If you've never donated blood before and are nervous/don't know what to expect, contact me. I've had great experiences donating blood and look forward to helping save lives in this simple way.
Spread the word to your friends and family! |

| Dark Lord Ride: Dark Lord Day is the only day of the year to buy Three Floyds Dark Lord Russian imperial stout, described in the NY Times as "plain goodness". DLD is a festival where participants can meet other beer enthusiasts, sample beers from all over the world, buy Dark Lord, try Oak Aged Dark Lord, eat BBQ, listen to live music, and generally have a great time. We'll leave the clock tower at 8:30, pick up South Siders at the 31st Street beach house at 9:15, take a short break at Wolf Lake, partake of Dark Lord Day, and return. Going, we'll take the Daniel Burnham Centennial Century route, coming back, the traditional winter route. This will be a "TOUR ride" with few stops. We won't necessarily stay together. Faster riders may go ahead, and slower riders may drop back. Bring money, a lock, snacks to have en route, and panniers for Dark Lord you don't finish there. Anyone interested is more than welcome to meet us at the brew pub if they don't care to participate in the bike ride. | Clock Tower (3700 N.
