Ride to Pierogi Fest: Come join us on Sunday, July 27, 2008, for the 2nd Annual Ride to Pierogi Fest. Located in Whiting, Indiana, Pierogi Fest is a celebration of that darling dumpling originating in eastern Europe. It was started by a group of friends while eating breakfast (probably vegan-style) at Dimitri's Cake and Steak. They didn't choose the Kielbasa, and (luckily) they didn't choose Charnina (aka. ducks blood soup); instead, they chose the lonely dumpling in an effort to promote good, healthy eating throughout the environmentally friendly town of Whiting, Indiana. So come join us at Buckingham Fountain on Sunday, July 27, 2008. We will take the following route at a "touring" pace (average 12-14mph) that follows this route: If you haven't checked out the luscious website of Pierogi Fest, it's here: And you can read more about your friend, the dumpling, here: Last year, we saw the World's Largest Pierogi....a whopping 75 pounds! Riders should meet at Buckingham Fountain at 11am. The ride leaves at 11:15am, sharp. If you miss us, meet us on the way down. If you're on the South Side and do not wish to ride north to the fountain, contact me to make arrangements. Don't be shy; the pierogi is your friend, and riding a bike to the fest with 1, 3, or 27 speeds with coaster, hand, or endo-brake always makes them taste better. A google calendar invite can be found at the following link: = This ride will be more exciting if you wear a helmet, sunglasses, and sunscreen. = Buckingham Fountain  Sun, Jul 27, 2008 11:00  Eric Pancer  793

Jefferson Park Bike TourEvery month I plan and host a neighborhood bike tour. This October our tour is set for the Jefferson Park community area. Here are the details: Jefferson Park 4822 N Long, Chicago, IL 1:00 PM Sunday October 26, 2008 Jefferson Park, Chicago Community Area #11 is 10 miles northwest of the Loop. Nicknamed, the “Gateway to Chicago”, farmers once came from far and wide to sell their goods in Jefferson, first a township and then a village named to honor Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson’s ideal location began as two Native American trails, grew to include the area’s earliest toll plank roads, and was thereafter augmented by rail and commuter lines. Today the area has a population of over 40,000, a tremendous amount of green space, historical homes and buildings throughout, and a namesake park on the National Register of Historic Places where we will begin the tour. We wait 15 minutes for stragglers and then we ride on…. Hopefully we will see some of you this October for the Jefferson Park tour. Headlight Giveaway - call for volunteers: Calling all volunteers!! This Thursday, we will be giving away headlights at a downtown location!! As you may know, we are able to stage a headlight giveaway campaign due to a donation from member Jim Freeman. Thank you to all the volunteers who have shown interest in this program as the planning has grown and changed! We have goody bags all ready to go (information card, membership envelope, and red reflector tape) thanks to Monday volunteers! If you are interested and able to volunteer, please read the info below. Also, I encourage you to forward this message to other volunteers who may be interested! Duties include: * Engage cyclists in a short discussion -safety -the law -this is a donation -the Active Transportation Alliance (who we are and why this is important) - join us!! * Install lights on site -this does require dexterity (can't be done in mittens!) -this does not require tools * Be on location from 5:15pm to 7:15pm -if we told you exactly where it was, it would ruin the surprise!! -but we have to give you a little, so it is somewhere near the Chicago brown line stop Cool stuff about this job: You are protecting and informing cyclists! You get to give away free stuff! You might just save someone's life (or at least a few of their bones!) Not so cool stuff: It can be cold and/or wet outside and you need to use your hands (we might have some handwarmers - just ask). Some folks may not want to stop and listen. Even if it's not too cold, it can be after two hours, so please dress accordingly! Interested volunteers please contact jody@activetrans.org by 10:00am on Thursday. Also, keep an eye on www.activetrans.org/volunteer/opportunities for a current list of volunteer opportunities! Thanks again, and we hope to see you on Thursday!! In 2007 we had over 85 riders and donated over 1,000 toys! This year our goal is to donate 1,500 toys to Toys for Tots and other children's organizations. We are still looking for volunteers to help us set up bike trailers and load the toys. If you can't ride that day or volunteer before the event consider starting a toy drive at work instead of grab bag gifts or have your kids pick one toy they would like to donate to children less fortunate. Please join the Amlings Cycle community in this wonderful event and bring a smile to a young child's face this holiday season. You can still register to ride or volunteer behind the scenes by clicking the link. Amlings Cycle 8140 N. Milwaukee Ave, Niles-north of Oakton  Fri, Dec 19, 2008 6:30 AM  Joe Riechert

Christmas Social Ride: The Bagel Ride : A tradition is something you do for reasons long forgotten. Who knows how The Bagel Ride began? Who cares? It's a tradition, so just get out of bed, put on that new sweater your mother gave you for Christmas/Chanukah/Kwanzaa, drink some hot chocolate and join some of the CCC's hardiest riders as we get in one last ride in 2008. As usual, The Bagel Ride will be a short, slow ride that is dependent on weather conditions. The ride will end at The Bagel Restaurant in Lakeview for a Jewish delicatessen brunch. Neither snow nor sleet will stop us from our bagels, but the ride might be shortened under those conditions. Evanston Critical Mass: Evanston Critical Mass rides on the First Friday of every month. Come join us Friday, January 2, for the first ride of 2009! Our plan is to hold our second annual "Holiday Lights" ride. We'll cruise around the well-lit-up downtown for a while, and then travel through some of Evanston's vintage neighborhoods to enjoy the holiday lights! We'll end up back in downtown Evanston, and probably get some food. My suggestion is Chinese at the Pine Yard, but as always the exact route, and the final destination, is up to the will of the group. We meet between 6:30 and 7:00pm at Fountain Square, which is the corner of Davis, Sherman, and Orrington, in downtown Evanston. We take off promptly at 7:00. Bring "lights and layers" and come join us to kick off the New Year with a bike ride! Fountain Square in Evanston  Fri, Jan 2, 2009 6:30 PM  Vic Sholis

Forest Glen Bike Tour: Every month Big Shoulders Realty hosts a bike tour of a different Chicago Community Area. These are hosted tours that focus on the history and architecture of the area. They are not sales events and we do not look at homes for sale. We are doing this tour in cooperation with the Chicago Cycling Club. Forest Glen is a northwest side community area full of green space and homes normally associated with the suburbs. It is a great break from the city, right in the city. The 1st Annual Queen's Tweed Ride: Inspired by The London Fixed-Gear and Single-Speed Forum's "Tweed Run" and challenged by San Francisco's "Thursday Tweed Ride", I would like to announce the "1st Annual Queen's Tweed Ride"! This celebration of herringbone, hip flasks, and our noble steeds will be hosted by British Bicycles of Chicago, or the BBC. Everyone is invited! If you have a Brit bike, do ride. If you don't, but enjoy tweedy elegance, do ride. If you do both, CERTAINLY DO RIDE!!! 2 May 2009 marks the 80th anniversary of Winston Churchills invention of his exquisitely dry martini. As he stated on that auspicious day, "I would like to observe the vermouth from across the room while I drink my martini". The route, designed by the Right Honorable Lee Diamond, is 10 civilized miles meandering past (and into) some of The Windy City's most infamous (and still open) speakeasies. Where else but in these lively establishments would the ladies & gents find more bracing refreshments and hearty victuals? As with our fellow tweed runs, we hope to offer small, but significant, prizes for: 1. Most Dapper Chap 2. Most Snappy Lass 3. Most Stylish Noble Steed 4. Most Inspired Interpretation of Tweediness 5. Best Mustache (open to both lads and inventive lasses) Jake's Pub, 2932 N. Clark, Chicago, IL  Sat, May 2, 2009 1PM  Garth Katner  943
Get Your Guts in Gear Charity Bike Ride : More than a Ride - The Ride for Crohn's and Colitis, is a 3-day, 210-mile cycling journey that is raising awareness about Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and the needs of people living with ostomies. The Ride also raises funds for research, education, patient support, and advocacy work for these diseases. Join us for our Inaugural Ride in the Midwest, Friday, October 2nd through Sunday, October 4th ! Our route begins in northern Illinois, continues through southern Wisconsin to loop back to a final ceremony near Libertyville. Cyclists will enjoy views of rolling farmland while taking in the vibrant fall colors and country views along the scenic route. The ride is fully supported by an enthusiastic, all-volunteer crew, with fully stocked rest stops, sweep vehicles, and baggage transport between welcoming overnight camps. Delicious hot breakfasts and dinners are provided at each camp, and lunch is served along the route. GYGIG's Midwest route can be completed by a novice rider with proper training, and are challenging enough for seasoned cyclists. The Ride is a smaller event that provides plenty of opportunities to get to know your fellow cyclists and volunteers all riding for this vital cause! There is an $85 registration fee for riders and crew, and each rider needs to raise at least $1,800 to participate in the ride. All cyclists and crew must be at least 18 years old on or before the check-in day for the Ride (Thursday, October 1st ). www.IBDride.org Date of Event: Oct. 2-4, 2009 call us at 1-866-944-6848 to receive forms by mail! Ride To Provide: A Multiple Sclerosis Fundraiser: TheCycleStudio proudly presents Ride To Provide 2009: A Multiple Sclerosis Fundraiser, benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's Greater Illinois Chapter. We are looking for riders from outdoors and indoors to join us in effort to help raise funding for research into the cause and cure of MS. Contributions from this event will be used to support important research into the causes of, and cure for, multiple sclerosis and to underwrite the many important programs for those living with multiple sclerosis conducted by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. While this is a free event, a $25.00 donation to The Society is requested. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join us on October 10th, 2009.
