BYO Scissors (Bike Winter Balaclava/Gaiter Giveaway Cutting Party): I seek some help cutting gators and balaclavas to give away at upcoming events, such as the October 11 BW class at the Logan Square Farmer's Market. I have fleece, but need a few folks to help cut. My goal is to help teach more people how to do their own production so we can protect even more ears and cheeks this season. Participants will leave with their own copy of the patterns I use. Please RSVP. Near Armitage/Kimball in Logan Square. Call or message for address. 773.252.4657 Please note that our almost 3 yo will likely be running around. We'll keep him away from the sharp objects. Also, though I usually like to feed everyone enough food to last for a few days, this time, I can only promise some snacks, sweets and liquids. Thanks, Gin Logan Square  Tue, Oct 6, 2009 7:00 PM  Gin

Get Layered: Winter Cycling Tips and Tricks: A free workshop to promote biking as year-round transportation in Chicago. As Chicago parking meter fees soared this summer, record numbers of Chicagoans left their cars in the garage and began biking to work, to the store, and even to grandma’s house. With autumn upon us, veteran cyclists are now sharing Chicago’s best kept transportation secret—-there’s no need to banish your bike to the basement this winter. With a little preparation and know-how, all-season cycling is no sweat! Gin Kilgore, a longtime all-season bike commuter, doesn't think winter cycling is such a big deal. "I see all these sweaty, gasping cyclists on August ozone action days--to me, that's much more extreme than biking though crisp, snow-calmed January evenings. In fact, during inclement weather, my bike is the most reliable and comfortable way of getting around town. Sure, I have invested in a few items to keep me warm and dry, but they were cheaper by far than car payments or transit passes." To inspire and equip cyclists to use bikes for transportation year round, Kilgore and other veteran winter cyclists will lead this free class. Workshop topics will include winter biking attire with the ever-popular “get layered” strip tease demo; riding safely though wind, snow, and ice; gear and maintenance tips; and even a visit from jolly old St. Nick! Free door prizes will feature cycling accessories that will help make all- season cycling a breeze. This workshop is part of Chicago Bike Winter, a grass roots series of educational, social, and activist events that have been encouraging all-season cycling since 1999. 3111 W Logan Blvd/Logan Square Farmers Market Grassy Knoll at the Southeast corner of Logan Blvd. & Milwaukee Ave.  Sun, Oct 11, 2009 11:00 AM  Bike Winter Enthusiast

West Town Planning Ride #2: This is planning ride # 2 involving the east side of West Town, east of Damen, including Damen. This initial phase is still after an assembled list of viable properties, locations, murals, and other items have been cessed out in advance. A map will be available here prior to the ride. All are welcome. Unlike actual rides, poor photography weather is fair reason to call it early/cancecl in advance. Half of the reason for these rides is the documentation. http://tinyurl.com/ciclourbanomap  Mon, Oct 12, 2009 6:00 PM  Lee Diamond

West Town Planning Ride #3: This is planning ride # 3 involving some initial route planning, including street conditions observation, and some follow-up for poor photos of prior research rides, missed spots and properties, additional angles, tour attempts and the like. A map will be available here prior to the ride. All are welcome. Unlike actual rides, poor photography weather is fair reason to call it early/cancecl in advance. Planning Ride for West Town/Pre-ride: This is a sloppy dress-rehearsal. It will be an attempt at the final route, but still subject to considerable revision. One of the considerations will be elimination of that which may make the ride too long, angle of entry on important stops, best places to stop a large crowd if needed, etc. A map will be available here prior to the ride. All are welcome. Unlike actual rides, poor photography weather is fair reason to call it early/cancecl in advance. Riding up to hear music at Uncommon Ground on Devon: Let's pedal seven miles up to cozy, eco-friendly Uncommon Ground restaurant and cafe, 1401 W. Devon, to hear Critical Mass musician Robin Beinemann (1/2 of Twang Bang, which has performed several times on CM via bike trailer) and his wife Jenny. See details below. Meet at Boulevard bikes in Logan Square at 8 pm, departing around 8:15. Jenny & Robin Bienemann with Delaney Davidson Uncommon Ground (Devon) -- Thursday November 5 - 9:00pm This will be a very fun show! Jenny & Robin will be stirring up a potent stew of soothing lyricism and quirky musicianship, lightly spiced with some looping technology! Delaney Davidson is NOT TO BE MISSED! He is truly one of the wildest performers we have seen lately. FIRST TIME IN CHICAGO! Original dark country blues with a Baltic edge as only a twisted New Zealander could interpret it. Imagine rambling lyrics put to a Spaghetti Western soundtrack performed by a 1-man band! Further imagine Roy Rogers signed up with the dark side, filled with regret, hell-bent on revenge! http://www.robinb.org/music.html http://jennybienemann.com/ http://www.myspace.com/delaneyfdavidson Thursday November 5 Uncommon Ground (Devon) http://www.uncommonground.com/pages/devon_home/35.php 1401 W. Citizens for Bike Boulevards Now kick-off meeting: Help start a new citizen action group to promote (demand!) bike boulevards. There are lots of streets in Chicago, and cars don't need to be on all of them. Cyclists should be able to enjoy riding and not worrying about whether a driver's paying attention. And if cycling seems safe, then lots, lots more people might start riding. If you want to take a stand to make these things happen, come to the meeting. We will 1. identify an effective plan for promoting Bike Boulevards in Chicago on a faster schedule, and 2. establish a core group of people who will make this group run. And 3. have fun. Winter Bike Tour of Uptown and Andersonville: The winners are in! The first Bike Winter/Big Shoulders Realty winter tour will be Andersonville and Uptown. Uptown, Chicago Community Area #5 sits 6 miles directly north of the Loop. Uptown can boast of a rich history that is equal parts ritzy and ragged. The community has thrived during the glory of the jazz age and suffered mightily during the Great Depression. Uptown was once the hub of the early American Movie industry. It’s ornate theaters, grand ballrooms, nightclubs, apartment buildings, mansions and central commercial district are amongst the finest architectural masterpieces in the city. Formerly part of Uptown, Andersonville is now part of Edgewater, which became its own Community Area (#77) in 1980. This neighborhood has been a thriving residential community since the mid-19th century, and is well known today for its amazing housing stock, independently owned businesses and a very comfortable, walkable neighborhood in the heart of north side. Get on your woolies and gators and join us for a wonderful winter ride through the northside. http://tinyurl.com/andersonvilleuptownwinter  Sat, Nov 28, 2009 1:00 PM  Lee Diamond

“Skirt” Night at Trek Store Highland Park: In September 2004, Nicole DeBoom won Ironman Wisconsin wearing a home-sewn prototype skirt that she had designed. While her winning performance was impressive, what really set the fitness community abuzz was what she was wearing. A skirt? While running in a triathlon? And winning said triathlon? Yes, yes and yes! SkirtSports was launched. A revolution was born... Now it's not just one woman - it's every woman. Runners. Cyclists. Everyday Superheroes. Triathletes. Tennis players. Swimmers. Walkers. Fashionistas. It's for anyone looking to add some extra inspiration, style, and fun to their daily workouts & daily lives. It's for all of us. Working Bikes Shipping Party: Working Bikes to Ship 500 Bikes to Tanzania on Saturday The volunteers of Working Bikes will load 500 used bikes for the Vijana Vocational Center in Arusha, Tanzania this Saturday, December 5th from 10 to 3 at 2434 S. Western. http://www.globalal lianceafrica. org/bikeDrives. html Vijana Vocational Training Centre The Vijana Vocational Centre is dedicated to providing orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) in Tanzania access to vocational training, life skills training, and psycho-social support. Vijana provides specific vocational training in: bicycle mechanics, maintenance and repair; bicycle related pedal-power design; and bicycle business management, as well as computer training and secretarial skills, and English, French and Spanish Foreign Language courses. There are over 200 students annually that receive instruction at Vijana, and the number continues to increase each year. The Vijana Centre is committed to the educational development of OVC and youth who, because of the impact of HIV/AIDS on their lives, do not have the resources to attend primary and secondary school in Tanzania. The strategic goal of Vijana's educational programs is to provide training so that a young person can gain entrance into the formal sector of economy. Vijana also serves as a community development and resource center for the local community. With a large conference center and spacious grounds, Vijana is a focal point for international organizations partner with Vijana for various purposes including: art therapy programs for OVC and youth centered activities, seminars and training workshops, as well as for the administration of vaccines and other medical services to children and adults in the Njiro/Lemara region of Arusha, Tanzania where the center is located. Global Alliance for Africa has a partnership with the US Peace Corps that provides a volunteer to Vijana which will include a community library/computer facility/art center. Learn about our Bike Drives and the Bicycle Barbers programs Orphan and Youth Initiatives Our programs address the needs of OVC of all ages, including shelter, education, food security, access to health care, psycho-social support, and legal services. However, a significant number of our programs focus on providing services for orphaned girls and boys and the most vulnerable adolescents and youth aged 15-24 who lack support and care from any other source. This demographic segment of the population is growing rapidly throughout East Africa, and USAID has identified this group as the least likely to have received services from local government initiatives and international NGOs. In a world where half of new HIV infections occur among 15-24 year olds, education and acquired vocational skills, as well as psycho-social support, can be life-saving, and prevent as well as mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS. Creative Living in the City: Lively Biking in the Dead of Winter: Think bicycling along with wearing white ends on Labor Day? Think again. This edition of Active Transportation Alliance and Friends of the Park’s free Creative Living in the City Lecture Series highlights ways for you stay biking during Chicago’s winter wonderland. The Chainlink (www.thechainlink.org), Chicago bicycling's online community, has blossomed from an idea to more than 2,500 members in 18-months. The Chainlink founder Leah Neaderthal, will discuss how online tools can reinforce and, in some cases, build a community that is based on pedaling away from a computer. Lauren Sailor, co-chair of Chicago Bike Winter (www.bikewinter.org), will also join Leah to talk about this grassroots organization that provides a variety of classes, promotion and community to help keep you going through the snow and chill. 7th Annual Amlings Holiday Toy Ride: Group ride from Amlings Cycle in Niles to Mystic Celt 3443 N Southport with donated toys for "Toys for Tots" FAQs Can I donate more than one toy? Absolutely! You still get only one fantastic breakfast, however, you will double or triple the joy you get from giving. Do I have to tow a trailer? While most riders have a great time pulling a trailer filled with toys, you don’t have to pull one. You can transport the toy(s) on a rack, in a backpack, or have another rider put it in their trailer. Do I have to ride both ways? No, while most riders do the round trip, we will have transportation back to the shop for those that would like a ride back. Hey, it could be cold December 11th, how should I dress? Dress in layers as you would for any active event in the winter. Layers let you ventilate as your body temp rises with exercise, and then re-bundle as you cool down. What if it snows? We ride! Of course safety is our major concern. We will not ride in dangerous conditions. We will keep you advised of ride changes via email. What if I break down? As with any ride, please bring a bike in good working order. If you do break down our mechanics will try to get you rolling again. If that not possible we will transport you and your bike to Mystic Celt via the support vehicles. Amlings Cycle - 8140 N. Milwaukee in Niles  Fri, Dec 11, 2009 6:30 AM  Joe Reichert

Winter Bike Tour of Hyde Park: Join Chicago Bike Winter and Big Shoulders Realty for the second of our bike tours this winter, this time a repeat ride of our Hyde Park tour. Hyde Park, Chicago Community Area #41 sits 7 miles south of the Loop. It is a unique community not just in the south side, or just in Chicago, but in the world. It is home to the University of Chicago, and the grand gothic campus dotted with several notable moderns. The community around the campus is equally impressive. Luminaries like Frank Lloyd Wright, Frederick Olmsted, Lorado Taft, Howard Van Doren Shaw, Dwight Perkins, George and William Keck, and Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe are but some of the giants with handsome contributions to the areas rich architectural palette. Hyde Park is an full of locally owned businesses, and community organizations and caring stewards of the history of the neighborhood. The best way to see such history and wonder is of course, on a bicycle. http://tinyurl.com/hydeparkwintertour  Sat, Dec 19, 2009 1:00 PM  Lee Diamond

Citizens for Bike Boulevards Now Meeting: Be a part of a new citizen action group to promote (demand!) bike boulevards. There are lots of streets in Chicago, and cars don't need to be on all of them. Cyclists should be able to enjoy riding and not worry about whether a driver's paying attention. And 3. have fun. Midnight Marauders: This month join the Marauders as we spread some holiday cheer, meaning beer to those less fortunate. Every year different groups have food drives, toy drives, you name it. Well this month the Marauders are having a beer drive. Yes, we could throw some boxes of pasta at people living on lower Wacker, but really what the hell are they going to do with that? Here buddy, have a box of mac-n-cheese, good luck chewing that! No sir. We are going to give them what everyone really wants- free beer. That will hopefully brighten some holiday spirits. Beer donations should not be chilled, we don't want to contribute to hypothermia, and if the recipients prefer it cold, they can drink it later. Donations of non-perishable, prepared foods (no cooking required) will also be accepted and distributed. Billy Goat (430 N. Lower Michigan Ave.)  Sat, Dec 19, 2009 11:30 p.m.  Martin Hazard

X-mas Eve pedal to dinner in Chinatown and a movie: A Bike Winter tradition. Meet at Daley Plaza at 5:30 pm, leaving at 5:45. Ride to Won Kow, 2237 S. Wentowrth in Chinatown, for old-school Chinese-American food and - you guessed it - tropical drinks. Afterward we'll go watch a movie on the Near North Side, maybe "Fantastic Mr. Fox" if it's still playing. Daley Plaza  Thu, Dec 24, 2009 5:30 p.m.  John Greenfield  1086
Bike Winter Outreach - Chicago Critical Mass: Help Santa pass out balaclavas and gaiters to Chicago Critical Mass participants. This is an excellent opportunity to spread the Gospel of Bike Winter. Daley Plaza  Fri, Dec 25, 2009 5:30 p.m.  Santa willow  1004
The Bagel Ride - Skokie Edition: Some traditions are timeless. Turkey at Thanksgiving. The seventh inning stretch. Others can benefit from a little change. A single Christmas tree in Daley Plaza. The designated hitter. With that in mind, this year's ride won't end at The Bagel Restaurant in Lakeview. Instead, we're going to check out The Bagel Restaurant at Old Orchard. We'll start from the Robert Crown Center in Evanston; from there we'll meander through Evanston and Skokie to our destination. This is the last CCC ride of 2009, so come on out and help celebrate both the holidays and the end of another year of great Chicago-area rides. And for you traditionalists, change is good. Think about how much fun it would be if the Cubs and White Sox were still playing in November. As long as the White Sox won. Email a friend... Critical Mass is Out for Blood - Blood Drive: Join Critical Mass riders today at the Thompson Center to donate blood at LifeSource. Did you know that when you donate blood through LifeSource you can give them a group code to give a specific group credit for your efforts to help save lives? The Chicago Critical Mass group code is CM99. Please consider using this code for all of your future LifeSource blood donations. Just tell the person at the front desk that you have a group code and tell them it is CM99. LifeSource is familiar with the CM99 code at the Thompson Center donor center but if they look at you funny, it is the perfect opportunity to talk up Critical Mass. If today is not a good day to donate, you can walk in or schedule an appointment M-F 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. If the Thompson Center is not a good location for you, visit their web site for a list of donor centers and hours. If you've never donated blood before and are nervous/don't know what to expect, contact me (TheDerailleur@gmail.com). Public viewing of stolen bikes: Cops bust large fencing operation on West Side January 18, 2010, Chicago Breaking News Center Police on Chicago's West Side are questioning three men after officers busted what they said was a large criminal fencing operation and found about $100,000 worth of stolen goods at a West Garfield Park graystone. Austin District tactical officers executed a search warrant at a two-flat building in the 4300 block of West Congress Parkway about 5:20 p.m. Sunday, police said. Police suspected the building of being the site of a fencing operation well known to neighbors. When they searched the building and property, officers found a large number of stolen items in the building and a truck and attached trailer. The stolen goods, which police estimated were worth about $100,000, included power tools, bicycles, construction equipment, televisions and other audio-visual equipment, police said. Police scheduled a...public viewing from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Austin District Police Station, 5701 W. Madison Street. The three men were still being questioned this afternoon. *** Chicago Stolen Bike Registry: http://chicago.stolenbike.org/ Austin District Police Station (5701 W. Winter Bike Tour of Lincoln Square: On our third ride of the Bike Winter/Big Shoulders Realty, we re-visit Lincoln Square. Chicago Community Area #4 sits 7 miles northwest of the loop. The community area was a construct of a 1920s University of Chicago project to categorize different areas of the city, but it is also a neighborhood within the community area, as are Ravenswood, Bowmanville, Budlong Woods and Ravenswood Manor. Previously this entire area was known as Ravenswood, and many residents still think of it that way. Formerly a farming community for celery and pickles, the area developed as the transportation access to the area increased. Families used to cart their goods to the city along Little Fort Road, today’s Lincoln Avenue. In the 1890s, street cars created a new wave of development. In the 1900s, it was the Ravenswood elevated line and it spurred even more development. Utilizing the river and developing an industrial corridor on its banks was a further boom leading into the Great Depression. The area is filled with wonderful examples of bungalows, brick-flats, courtyard apartments and various Victorian houses and a number of requisite works by Clarence Hatzfeld, Dwight Perkins and Louis Sullivan. http://tinyurl.com/winterlincolnsquare  Sat, Jan 30, 2010 1:00 PM  Lee Diamond

Ride to Dinner @ Paramount Room for Shawn: This is one of those non-bike related thingies, but I am adding bikes to it to make it more fun. Shawn is an employee at the Paramount Room and a friend of a friend of mine. He was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 33. It must be pretty bad, because his employer donating HALF of the take from the entire day's sales (and staff are donating all their tips) so that Shawn's wife will not have to work while - well, you know - and his 14 month old daughter can get as much time as possible with him. Click the link above for more info. I am riding down there tonight to have dinner and drinks. I've heard it is a great place to go and they have some tasty deals. There will be some really good prizes in the raffle, but for anyone who is cash challenged (like me), even dinner and a drink or two will do more than just nourish you the way it usually does. The route will be from Lawrence/Western down Lincoln to Damen to Milwaukee. Lots of bike lanes. Join me if you like. Meetup at the Huettenbar (4721 N. Lincoln) beforehand. Bike racks galore. You can call or text me if you'd prefer to meet en route. There could also be a snow ride afterwards! http://www.paramountroom.com/index.html Paramount Room (415 N. Principles in Motion: "Principles in Motion" Art Opening and Exhibit, which includes several beautiful bike photos, drawings, and paintings. Refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public. Advanced registration is appreciated. In celebration of the close links between innovation and art, entrepreneurship and economic empowerment, UChicagoTech, the University of Chicago's Office of Technology and Intellectual Property, has teamed up with Little Black Pearl, a local non-profit organization, to present “Principles in Motion” Art Opening and Exhibit. What began as a conversation to fill blank wall space in UChicagoTech’s new offices has evolved into a collaboration to maintain and showcase a rotating and ongoing collection of artwork for sale by local artists. The works are provided by Little Black Pearl, an organization that serves youth and adults in the Kenwood/Oakland, Woodlawn, and Bronzeville neighborhoods on Chicago’s south side. Featured artists in the exhibit include Cleveland Dean, Steve Dennis, Maxine-Talia Garcia, Cydney Lewis, Ann Patrick O’Brien, Lou Raizin, and Robin Monique Rios. The collection represents the partnership between both organizations which share the same belief that mentoring, entrepreneurship and innovation can improve lives and society as a whole. Park Scouting Research Ride #1: Research for starting places for the 2010 Neighborhood Bike Tours. The schedule for the rides is as follows: March 28, 2010 – Lakeview April 25, 2010 – Lower West Side May 23, 2010 – Humboldt Park June 19, 2010 – East and West Garfield Park July 25, 2010 – Near West Side August 22, 2010 – Lincoln Park September 19, 2010 – Bridgeport and Armour Square October 24, 2010 – Norwood Park The goal is to tour all of the parks in these communities to determine the best starting place for each ride. We are not doing Humboldt Park, Norwood Park or East/West Garfield Park, because those starting points are set in their namesake parks. They are therefore divided up like so: Friday February 19 4:00 to 8:00PM Parks in Lakeview and Lincoln Park Tuesday February 23 4:00 to 8:00 PM Parks in Lower West Side, Near West Side, Bridgeport and Armour Square Each will be listed in the calendar separately. Finally, we will end the evening with an aftershow featuring entertainment provided by members of the local bike community. So come out, and help us find out what a heart's cockles are, and if booze, bikes, and porn can warm them. Wicker Park (to be announced)   Sat, Feb 20, 2010 9:00 p.m.  Martin Hazard

The Shortest Pho Ride Ever: Winter is here and it's time for Pho! Meet up at my house (Hermitage/Lawrence, email/call for exact address) and ride 6ish blocks to a Vietnamese Pho restaurant at Argyle Street and Broadway. It can't get simpler or shorter. But, if you think that is too long of a ride, you can meet us at the restaurant at 6:30 (wimps). We will be eating at Pho Viet located at 4941 N. Broadway. If you don't know what Pho Soup is, I copied some stuff from Wikipedia: Vietnamese dishes are meals typically served with lots of greens, herbs, vegetables and various other accompaniments such as dipping sauces, hot and spicy pastes, and flavor enhancements such as a squeeze of lime or lemon. The dish is garnished with ingredients such as green onions, white onions, coriander, Thai basil (húng quế) (should not be confused with sweet basil - Vietnamese: húng chó or húng dổi), fresh Thai chili peppers, lemon or lime wedges, bean sprouts, and leaves of culantro (ngò gai) (should not be confused with cilantro or coriander - which is called ngò rí in Vietnamese. The coriander plant is used just for its seeds - hạt ngò to prepare the broth, but not its leaves). If that doesn't leave you hungry, I don't know what will... And their veggie spring rolls are amazing. Julie's House, then Pho Viet Restaurant (Hermitage/Lawrence)  Sun, Feb 21, 2010 6:00 p.m.  Julie

Mariel Mentink Benefit: I've talked with some of you about Mariel Mentink, but it might not be news you've heard otherwise. I wouldn't have if I didn't have so many friends in the Austin cycling community... Briefly: Mariel is a Chicago girl who was severely injured in a hit and run on New Year's Eve in Austin, TX while riding with a group of helmeted, well-lit cyclists. She was only recently deemed stable enough to be moved from a hospital there back to Chicago, where she's near her family and friends, for continuing treatment and rehab. There are regular updates from her family here: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/marielmentink There is a benefit for Mariel on the 26th from 8pm to 2am and I'll be heading there for a while after CCM. And here's the more complete info straight off the facebook event page: Join us for live music, beer, and bike mechanics working for donations to give your ride a tune up or repair. All proceeds go to the Mariel Mentink Medical Fund to support Mariel as she recovers from a severe cycling accident that occurred on January 1, 2010. Who- Early on New Years day a cyclist named Mariel Mentink was hit from behind on her commute home. The 40 mph hit and run collision left Mariel struggling for her life in the Brackenridge ICU. Doctors and nurses are still tending to her broken vertebrae, skull fractures and many other cracked bones and injuries. "So far, she improves a little every day. It is expected that the physical repairs will take six weeks to heal, and will be uncomfortable until then. The back operation that she experienced takes six months for the pain to subside. Brain recovery takes an unknown amount of time; medical science is not advanced enough to predict an outcome. And the outcomes are different for each person." -Excerpt from Mariel's Caringbridge Journal. What- We as Mariel's friends, and a bicycling community, want to show our support for Mariel and her amazingly strong family. We plan to do this by having an event/fundraiser for her. This event's purpose is to support Mariel financially and also to help to increase bike safety and driver to bicycle awareness. There are lots of events going on to show Mariel our support and, if you're a member of the Chicago/Illinois community, this is your chance to participate. Bands, bicyclists/bike shops, local businesses, tattoo/glass artists, painters, hats/bag makers and even a fundraising foundation have already shown interest by offering to donate their time, give items for a raffle, or even take part at the event in the areas of Austin TX, DeKalb IL, Chicago IL, and Knoxville TN. The amount of support that so many people have already shown is amazing, and we need your help too. 3951 W. Fullerton Ave.  Fri, Feb 26, 2010 8:00 p.m.  Michelle Green  1191

We will judge you for doing the Stanky Legg! We will also secretly wish *we* could do the Stanky Legg! Don't tell me you aren't excited. And plan on it going a good deal later than 11:45pm! We're starting at Empire, then dancing our way to Latebar for 80's new wave, then winding up at Hideout (the only place with a cover ($5)). the facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/event.php?eid=297400776719&ref=mf Empire Liquors (1566 Milwaukee)  Sat, Feb 27, 2010 9:00 p.m.  Michelle Green

Big City Big Shoulders Bike Winter Series Wrap-up Party at Janik's: Holy cow and super no-notice Batman! Oh well.....a party is a party. Please join the Wicker Park/Bucktown S.S.A. and Big Shoulders Realty for a wrap-up party for our Winter Bike Tour Series with Bike Winter. The kind folks at WPB SSA offered to sponsor some appetizers, sandwiches, hot cocoa and coffee to celebrate the end of the tour series immediatley folllowing the Tour of West Town. Big Shoulders Realty is going to buy some rounds of drinks for those that would like to imbibe and we are deeply appreciative of the WPB SSA's kind gift to the riders. The best part is that Janik's is open JUST FOR US. Yes, they close at 4, and are reoppening for the riders for the party at 5-esque, or a little sooner for the impatient. If you have never been to Janik's you are in for a real treat. You can check out some Yelp reviews or City Search, or MetroMix, etc. It's a great place, nice beer selection, and after the free stuff is gone, you will be super happy at their beer prices. Seriously. Anyway, join in if you can. See you at Janik's! Janik's Cafe  Sat, Feb 27, 2010 5:00 PM  Lee Diamond

Lakeview Planning Ride #2: Another season of neighborhood rides are upon us. As with many of the rides last season, I am doing 3 to 4 open-to-anyone research rides. These are rides I do to photograph and document different buildings and sites in each community, assess point-of-entry for different sites, and examine neighborhood streets and routes. These are rides that are based on other research and rides already run, so they are designed to be efficient, educational, and collobarative for those that come along. Our first tour is for Lakeview. We will meet for each research ride at the starting point of the tour, which is Lakeview High School Park. The park is in the rear of the building, one block north of Irving Park, one block east of Ashland at 4055 N Greenview. There will be four different planning rides, which are each seperately listed, but are as follows: Tuesday March 16, 2010 at 5:00 PM Sunday March 21, 2010 at 11:00 AM Thursday March 25, 2010 at 5:00 PM (pre-ride) The actual tour will be held on Sunday March 28, 2010. CMAP Bicycle and Pedestrian Task Force Meeting: 3/17 at 1pm is CMAP's bike and ped task force meeting at the Willis/Sears Tower. http://www.cmap.illinois.gov/bikeped/minutes.aspx It's a great place to learn about what's going on at the regional transportation planning level, especially for people interested in design, policy, and funding. One agenda item of note is IDOT's suggested revisions to their design manual in response to the Complete Streets law in Illinois. In other words, IDOT is rethinking the way they approach pedestrian and bicycle accommodations on state roads. Follow the link above and see handout 1. Lowell Nelson will be representing BTG on the task force. (Thank you, Lowell!) If you have comments or questions you would like him to share on behalf of BTG, send them to Lowell Nelson (lowell.nelson at hobbsbrook dot com). The meetings are open to the public, but as a general rule, audience questions and comments are taken at the end. Just a head's up. Lakeview Research Ride #3: Another season of neighborhood rides are upon us. As with many of the rides last season, I am doing 3 to 4 open-to-anyone research rides. These are rides I do to photograph and document different buildings and sites in each community, assess point-of-entry for different sites, and examine neighborhood streets and routes. These are rides that are based on other research and rides already run, so they are designed to be efficient, educational, and collaborative for those that come along. Our first tour is for Lakeview. We will meet for each research ride at the starting point of the tour, which is Lakeview High School Park. The park is in the rear of the building, one block north of Irving Park, one block east of Ashland at 4055 N Greenview. There will be four different planning rides, which are each separately listed, but are as follows: Sunday March 21, 2010 at 11:00 AM Thursday March 25, 2010 at 5:00 PM (pre-ride) The actual tour will be held on Sunday March 28, 2010. Gapers Block Criterium Races: This five-day series gives newer racers a low-cost, low-tech, nearby opportunity to try out criterium events and gain valuable experience, skills, and confidence before the season opens. Series: Online registration is for the 5-day series of races only. One day registration is day-of on-site only. Your registration fee here covers the cost of five days of racing. (While the field limit is 50, pre-registration is capped at 40 per field to allow space for day-of registrants.) Licensing: All riders pre-registering MUST have a USA Cycling annual license, available at the USAC website. Non-license-holders may register day-of, but will pay a $10/day additional day-of license fee. Day-of: If you prefer to register for individual races day-of, at least 10 spaces will be available in each field each day. Fees will be $20/day for men and $10/day for women. If you do not hold a USAC license, there will be an additional $10/day licensing fee. Cash or check only. Riding multiple fields: Riders will not be allowed to pre-register for more than one field. Any multiple entries will be canceled and refunded. Riders wishing to participate in more than one race a day may pay the day-of fee and register the day of the race for their second field. Rules: This event is held under USAC permit, all USAC rules apply. All riders must wear an approved helmet at all times while at the race venue. No alcohol is allowed in the park. Results: This is a low-tech training criterium series. Results will list top finishers (we aim to have 10-deep placings, but it is not always possible) and all other riders will be scored as DNP, "did not place." Directions: Get your warm-up by riding down! Follow the Bike Route signs from the Lake Front Path. Or, if you must take a car... If you follow online directions you'll get off the I-90 skyway at 92nd, the first exit after/before the toll, and pay $3 each way every day. Instead, we recommend exit the Dan Ryan !-94 at 63rd (exit 58B), go east on 63rd, south on King, and take South Chicago Ave. Left on 95th which leads into the park. Stay right at the T with Crilly. You can park along Crilly before the Ave G stop sign. Racing will be South on S Ave G, left turn onto E 100th Dr, continue left onto Crilly Dr, then left back to Ave G. Weather considerations: Events will be starting rain or shine. Where does the money go? Half Acre Cycling believes that racing should be affordable and we have worked hard to make this series the least expensive racing in the region. Still, we know it's not cheap. Our main costs include permitting fees (City of Chicago, Chicago Parks District, and USAC), USAC licensing fees (how we get insurance for the event), paying our officials, and paying our paramedic. A key reason this series is so affordable is because we've chosen not to pay for cash payouts or prizes and our volunteers are absorbing more of the work. If you would like to help out, please let us know. Or, if your club is interested in hosting a more affordable, accessible event, we'd be happy to share how we've done this with you. SPECIAL THANKS to Chicago Parks District, Alderman Pope, District 4 police, Illinois Cycling Association. Calumet Park (9801 S. Ave. G)  Mon, Mar 22, 2010 6:00 p.m.  Half Acre Cycling  1215

Wheel Building: Build your own wheels! Participants learn how to lace spokes into a wheel, apply tension to spokes, and make a wheel round and true. Wheel building theory will also be discussed in class. We will be using the Gerd Schraner method of wheel building. 3 cross spoked wheels in either 32 or 36 hole rims and hubs will be built. Using this method makes a strong, reliable and servicable set of wheels. Class 1 we will lace both front and rear wheels. Class two we will tension, round and true both wheels. Rims, hubs and spokes may be ordered and purchased through our sales shop Ciclo Urbano. Select rims, hubs and spokes chosen by the instructor will be on hand and may be purchased by participants, or built up for WTB with no purchase necessary. Specialty hubs and rims can be ordered and are subject to availability but must be specified and placed two weeks before the start of class. Participants should consult with the instructor if planning to supply their own rims, hubs and spokes for the class. Proper spoke calculations must be made to assure proper building of wheels. APBP is hosting this webinar as part of the International Scan implementation process. Scan participants saw so many more women cycling in the five countries we visited than one typically sees in most U.S. cities. Why? Why not here? The recommendations of the International Scan could help to increase the number of women and girls cycling in the U.S. and Canada. If more women and girls bicycled more places more often, they could achieve better health while having a very positive impact on their community and the environment. The solutions cross many disciplines and address many factors related to economic viability here and abroad. As part of this project, women and girls are invited to take a "snapshot in time survey” at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/womencycling. We would like to hear from non-cyclists as well as current and past cyclists. Preliminary survey results highlighted during the webinar; final results available after May 15, 2010 when the survey closes. Liar's Tour: The scary thing about this ride, is that if you show up, will I? Nearly everything about this tour is a lie. Celebrating April Fool's Day, I am doing a tour of the Northside of Chicago, where, in contrast to the architecture/neighborhood tours I do, EVERY STOP IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR OUTRAGEOUS MISINFORMATION. The ride will be 10 to 15 miles. It will certainly involve large amounts of fibbing, nonsense, tall-tales, April Fool's jokes, and bike riding. And a bit of drinking too. To start things off, here are a few lies about the ride: 1 - No one will have any fun. 2 - We will start directly on time. 3 - I will be doing my normal, detailed research on every subject for the ride. 4 - I will be wearing a suit for the first time in over a decade. 5 - Howard Kaplan will be there. 6 - This ride will completely suck. See you there.......maybe. Cheers - Lee Diamond West Town Bikes (2459 W. Division St.)  Thu, Apr 1, 2010 7:00 p.m.  Lee Diamond

Wicker Park Critical Mass: We're still here! EVERY SINGLE First Friday at 6PM. Let me know if you can help get the word out, too. The Wicker Park Critical Mass – fill the streets with bikes, art, and happiness! Just as our city has a diverse array of neighborhoods and people, so too does its Critical Mass. Through the WPCM, and the neighborhood 'masses in general, new and old cyclists alike are re-connecting to the freewheelin' grassroots efforts to promote the fun and efficiency of biking through urban life. From the arterial crossroads of the Nelsen Algren fountain, our mass snakes through public spaces of architectural and artistic beauty. We are the Critical Mass of Wicker Park, the fruit of the Chicago Critical Mass, and the vehicle for public art in public space. Polish Triangle (1200 N. Ladies' Dirt Ride: Mountain biking can seem like an intimidating sport to get started in, but once you start, it is easy to get hooked. To help reach out to women interested in the sport, as well as women who are looking to ride more seriously, the women of Half Acre Cycling have joined forces with Julia Daher from XXX Racing-AthletiCo to organize a series of dates where Chicago-area ladies can ride together in a supportive environment to practice skills and have fun on the trail. Everyone from total beginners to experts are welcome. The first of these dates is going to be Saturday April 3rd, at 9:30am. We are going to ride at Waterfall Glen, since most of the area singletrack will still be muddy/unridable that early in the season. The riding at Waterfall Glen is on wide-ish multi-use trails, with some nice twists and turns but nothing technical. It is perfect for folks who just want to get more comfortable on the dirt, without a lot of roots & rocks getting in their way. This is an entirely informal event, just a chance to get to know other Chicago-based lady trail riders, build some community and have some fun. If it is nice, bring a lunch and we’ll picnic afterwards. Let us know if you plan on coming…we’d love to ride with you! Waterfall Glen (Darien)  Sat, Apr 3, 2010 9:30 a.m.  Jennifer Mosley

If today is not a good day to donate, you can walk in or schedule an appointment M 11:00 a.m. - 6 p.m. or Tu-F 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. If the Thompson Center is not a good location for you, visit their web site for a list of donor centers and hours. If you've never donated blood before and are nervous/don't know what to expect, contact me. I've had great experiences donating blood and look forward to helping save lives in this simple way. The two nights feature different set of films. I myself am planning to go Tuesday, but both days look like they have quite a good listing (see Field Museum web link). We Our Are Streets Project!: Earth Day is next Thursday, April 22, come do your part and lets clean the streets. People have been complaining about our messy streets, and the lack of street cleaners... Well stop complaining and do something! In this spirit, we're gonna do an old-fashioned litter pick-up. To ...help clean Ukrainian Village, we'll meet at the corner of Damen and Erie at 6:0 sharp so we can get the most out of the sunlight hours left after the work day (whatever that is). We'll work until it gets too dark and then we'll retire to my place for a beer or two. "But Ukrainian Village isn't my neighborhood." you say? Well, litter is amazingly aerodynamic, so today's Ukrainian Village shit can be in your yard tomorrow. So c'mon!!! If you'd like to do this in YOUR area instead, add a comment for people to get in touch with YOU and you guys can take it from there. There WILL be an "West of Western Ave." clean up the same time, meeting near Potomac and California. Contact me if you need the info for the Humboldt Park clean up. See you then! E A's Birthday Party/Javier Mendoza Release Show: Come see Javier Mendoza - a Spanish musician who currently lives in St. Louis - debut his latest CD "You" (English version) and "Tu" (Spanish version) at this Chicago CD release party. He released two versions of the CD because “I wanted the poetry captured equally in both languages without any loss of the original intention and emotion. So often, the Spanish version of an English song does not have the same power or true meaning.” You can also help me celebrate my birthday! What a combo. Join me at the Uncommon Ground at 1401 W. Book release party for "Bars Across America: Drinking and Biking from Coast to Coast": Help me celebrate the release of my new book Bars Across America: Drinking and Biking from Coast to Coast with a free party featuring the Blue Line Riders honky tonk band in the cozy confines of Cole's tavern. I'll be reading from the book and performing a few of my songs about cycling on guitar, alternating with sets by the Blue Line Riders (http://myspace.com/bluelineriders). The band kicks off the evening at 9 pm. About Bars Across America (Pint Size Press, 160 pages, $12.95): “As John spins his yarn across the U.S. via roads, paths and pubs, you’ll wish at some point you’d gone along.” – Dave “Mr. Bike” Glowacz, author of Urban Bikers’ Tips and Tricks. In Bars Across America, longtime Chicago bike and beer advocate John Greenfield tells the story of his 5,000-mile bike journey from Astoria, OR, to Portland, ME, stopping to check out 48 taverns along the way. Every other day or so he would take a break from the hot pedaling, duck into a watering hole, jot down notes about the décor, and get the skinny from the local barflies. He stopped at the Silver Dollar Saloon at the bottom of a canyon in Idaho, and Kerouac’s favorite dive in Denver. In Paxton, NE, Ole’s Big Game Steakhouse, filled with stuffed African wildlife, was a welcome oasis. He joined thousands on the rowdy RAGBRAI ride across Iowa, then led a pub roll to celebrate the striping of new bike lanes on Chicago’s Milwaukee Avenue. After experiencing a Parrothead party on the Canadian Riviera, he reached the ocean at Revere, MA, and celebrated at the Shipwreck Lounge, sadly destined for the wrecking ball. Along the way Greenfield met other scruffy cyclists, cowboys, carnies and lonely ex-cons. Part travelogue, part guidebook, part ode to the vanishing community tap, Bars Across America is the story of one man’s two-wheeled trek in search of the perfect pint. Cole's (2338 N. Milwaukee Ave.)  Fri, Apr 23, 2010 9:00 p.m.  John Greenfield
